What About Blue?
"What about blue?"
"What about it?" I asked.
"For the siding color. What do you think about blue siding?"
I looked at Scott incredulously. "What? No. This cottage is going to have white siding with black shutters, just like I've pictured it in my head."
Now it was Scott's turn to look incredulous. "No way. Over my dead body. We live in a white house with black shutters. 90 percent of the houses around us are white. We are not having a white house. Or gray. Everyone has white or gray."
Although I may have taken some creative liberties with what was actually said, that is basically how our conversation went when we started discussing siding colors.
I wanted safe and traditional .

My husband is not a "yes dear, whatever you want dear", kind of guy, which I appreciate. For the most part he trusts my design skills and taste level 99% of the time and is on board with what I come up with. However, he does have an opinion, as he should, and if it's something he feels strongly about he will make sure I know it. The color of the siding happened to be one of those things. Since we are both a part of this, I had to at least consider blue siding.
I started scouring Pinterest and Google looking for photos of blue houses. After accumulating a few for inspiration, I started to warm to the idea. However, this was a choice that, and I'm not exaggerating here, would keep me up at night. I could paint the interior of my whole house, end up hating it, and it would be relatively inexpensive and easy to change. An exterior siding color isn't relatively easy to change and it sure as hell isn't inexpensive. I knew whatever choice we made here we would be stuck with it for a very long time. I went back and forth for what felt like forever. It wasn't until we were in Nashville with our friends and I saw a dark blue house with a silver roof, that I knew for sure that was the direction we would go in. That Nashville house was a head turner. You couldn't help but look at it. I wanted a head turner!
We went to our meeting with the builder and they informed us that we had two blue sidings to choose from. One was a very saturated navy and the other was Norendex Woodsman Select in Steel Blue, which we chose. It is a beautiful blue-gray. Up until the very second that we saw it installed, I was second guessing the choice. For the second time, Scott was right. As soon as we drove up and saw it for the first time, it was obvious blue was the right choice.
Isn't she beautiful? I love how the dark blue looks with bright white trim and the platinum colored roof. And any time you have a dark siding color, bright white corner trim is a must.
My garage is so cute!
Originally, these windows were supposed to have black shutters. The builder made a mistake and added these 5 1/2 inch lineals. Another mistake turned into a pleasant surprise. I love how the thick trim looks. I still want to add the decorative crown crosshead above these windows, which as of today are still no where to be found. I've been told they were going to be ordered but I have yet to see them.
Now that the windows have thick trim, the front door needs a little extra. We opted to go with a 3 1/2 in trim to beef it up but not overwhelm. As of today, that trim has not been installed either. Hopefully these issues have not been completed because it has been so cold and not because a ball has been dropped again. Time will tell.
Screened in porch is taking shape. If you notice the stars, they are there because I must have inadvertently bumped the filter dial on my camera. I think they are fitting though. This house does sparkle when you first see it.
We are so happy we made this choice. This color blue looks so perfect in its lake setting. And white is boring. A little house by the lake is anything but boring.
